Sunflower Strategy Helps Blackheath Highschool to Improve Their Matric Pass Rate
The pass rate (matriekslaagsyfer) at Blackheath High improved (verbeter) from 59% in 2021 and 68% in 2022 to a noteworthy (merkwaardige) 88% in 2023.

Although he attributes (toeskryf) the pass rate to teamwork, Micheals says that he began at the school with a “no-nonsense” approach where it was necessary to return to the basics.

Sunflower Strategy
In September 2022, Micheals began his “Sunflower Strategy”. He tells how with the learners, then still in Grade 11, he discussed (gesels) the characteristics of a sunflower, which turns it’s face to the sun, regardless (ongeag) of where it is planted.

So that the children could realise that it doesn’t matter what your circumstances at home are.

To get the staff happy was the first priority, “because if the staff is happy, they will be more productive.
“I always told myself, if I see smiles on the people’s faces at the school, then I know we’re on the right path.”
